overview:

Blue Marble was given an opportunity to create a Christmas catalog mailer showcasing our entire product line. With multiple brands under Blue Marble, there was a challenge to present them under one roof at the same time while feeling cohesive. It was deemed necessary to create a new program called Brain Fuel, which would showcase all Blue Marble’s products under one umbrella while also creating an educational environment. The long term plan would have workshops, a newsletter, and a website.

solution:

Brain Fuel needed to be visually different from all our current brands. It was decided for it to be more illustration heavy to appeal more to children and encourage them to be excited about education. We created an illustration style heavily inspired by Pixar, which allowed it to have an air of whimsical excitement while also feeling familiar. Jewel toned colors were chosen to give the brand a rich, warm feeling without being overwhelming.

my role:

I was the lead illustrator for this project, where I developed the illustration style used as well as creating all artwork for the mailer, website banners, and marketing collateral. I was also in charge of developing and finalizing the color palette.

illustration process

When exploring styles for this project, it was essential that the style I developed could be done quickly due to our impending deadline for the Christmas mailer. I have always admired the vibrant and complex life a lot of Pixar concept art conveyed, so decided to challenge myself in emulating that style for our mailer.
I developed a system of blocking out all colors of an illustration then organizing them in clean layers to paint quick shadows and highlights. This allowed me to have my coworkers color block some illustrations for me even if they could not illustrate, which helped save time.
